Kissing, pouting, speaking secrets, not to forget all those shades of lipstick 💄 (we will wear more as our masks come off): our lips help put our best face forward.

Your lips are a central feature of your face. Creating the perfect pout requires skill and artistry. Dr. O’Neill has created a reputation for natural-looking lip enhancement. No alien lips produced here!

1. How much lip filler do I need?

The fear of overdone lips is a common theme when our team is speaking to a patient new to lip fillers. Ducky lips, sausage lips, Russian lip filler……a bad result often has more to do with injector technique rather than the amount of lip filler used. Dr. O’Neill will assess:

  • Your particular facial features
  • Your ethnicity and sex
  • The proportions of your lips
  • The projection of your lips compared to your nose and chin

Dr. O’Neill will discuss your lip enhancement goals, and create a lip treatment plan with you. Typically 1 syringe (= 1 ml filler) is used.

2. How long does lip filler last?

On average, lip filler lasts 4-8 months. This varies with the amount and type of filler used, and individual variation in how filler is metabolized.

3. Will it hurt?

The skin of our lips is very thin, and super sensitive due to an abundance of nerve endings. So it is important for our team to apply a prescription-strength numbing cream about 15 minutes before your lip filler treatment. Some patients find taking a tylenol before arrival takes the edge off. And of course, technique matters! Dr. O’Neill is a gentle injector and finds that injecting slowly is more comfortable.

4. What should I avoid before lip filler treatment?

To decrease the chance of bruising, Dr. O’Neill recommends you avoid:

  • ASA (aspirin), Advil, Motrin, Aleve, and NSAIDS for 7 days prior to your procedure. Tylenol is allowed.
  • Alcoholic beverages for 3 or more days
  • Fish oils for 3 or more days
  • Vitamin E for 1 week
  • Ginseng, ginkgo for 1 week

Please inform us if you are taking blood thinners such as Coumadin or warfarin.

If you are prone to cold sores, let us know. Dr. O’Neill will prescribe the antiviral Valtrex for you to start prior to your lip filler treatment.

5. What happens if I stop lip fillers?

We often are asked, “Do lips go back to normal after lip enhancement?”. Yes! Your lips will NOT appear shriveled when your filler wears off.

Dr. O’Neill uses hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvederm, Teosyal, Revanesse, Belotero, Restylane) and will personalize the treatment to create a perfectly plump lip for you.
